Utilizing games in the classroom not a new idea, however, implementing the use of technology and gaming is a bit more cutting edge. Websites abound that are available for student learning/gaming both at school and at home.
MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role playing games) allow students to interact with the world in a fresh manner. Students can take on the role of famous leaders in history and interact as that person. Students can experience life at different stages of the Earth’s history through MMORPGs.
Social gaming allows students to discuss the assignment within a different context. Using an avatar, students can attend class in an online school, interact with students from around the world, and apply what they learn within the realm of the game. Students are not only learning new material, they are also able to take theory and turn it into application.
Social online gaming also gives students who would normally be too shy to interact in a classroom the opportunity to interact with some anonymity. This frees their inhibition and allows them to explore the subject matter without boundaries.
Students leave the experience with a more in depth comprehension of the topic and a positive attitude about learning.
